Healthcare Strategist and Governance Expert
Gretchen M. Dahlen is the President and CEO of The Dahlen Company. Her professional career blends executive management and CEO experience with extensive Board work and health care consulting.
She brings significant expertise in strategy development and strategic planning, informed by her CEO positions, as well as having served as Vice President for Marketing, Planning and Business Development for a major health care system in Madison, WI.
Shortly after the Institute of Medicine’s report “To Err is Human” was published, Ms. Dahlen facilitated a board retreat on quality and strategy in healthcare. The learnings that came from the retreat preparations and discussions transformed her approach to healthcare administration. It became clearer that quality of care could not simply be delegated to medical practitioners…it needed hands-on leadership from top executives and the Board of Directors. The experience reinvigorated The Dahlen Company’s quality improvement seminars, as well as her board work. Given the importance of error-free healthcare to people’s health and longevity, Ms. Dahlen has a great sense of urgency to her work.
Ms. Dahlen’s ongoing experience in quality management and her belief in the power of transparency, led to the development of ConsumerHealthRatings.com. Launched in 2006 and expanded in early 2018, the Consumer Health Ratings website is a free public service guide to online ratings of health care quality and cost for consumers.
Ms. Dahlen is a member of the Board of AARP, a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a Board Leadership Fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD). She is currently on the Governance Committee of the AARP Board, and has previously served on the Audit & Finance Committee, and Member & Social Impact Committee.
She holds a Master’s Degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. Among the continuing education courses she has recently completed, is the Strategy, Cybersecurity & Risk Forum by NACD.
